Bob Andrake wrote a wine column for the Daily Olympian in Olympia WA, from 1991-1994. He wanted to understand better why some wines were made in particular ways, so in 1997 he decided it was time to try his own hand at winemaking.

The first 2 vintages were made in the garage of their home with lots of volunteer work from friends.

He has built a new 1400 square foot winery building on Boston Harbor Road about 7 miles north of downtown Olympia, with an additional building about the same planned for 2001.

Bob uses only free run juice and French oak barrels in his premium Andrake wines. The pressed wine is used in his second label "Hurricane Ridge". In 2000 Bob is trying out a Sangiovese; he also loves wine from the Malbec grape and hopes to be able to make a Malbec wine in the future.

Of special note:
Bob makes only red wines. In his Andrake labelled wines, he uses only the free run juice, and minimizes handling; they're unfined and unfiltered. His commitment to these methods shows in the "gravity" design of the new winery; grapes are brought in the top of the winery, and the juice flows downhill by gravity at each step; there is no pumping.

Bob uses the press juice from his grapes in his second label Hurricane Ridge Winery. These are also be fine wines, but not of the stellar quality of his namesake line.
